Snorkeling with Sea Turtles in San Juan: What to Expect at Condado

Snorkeling with sea turtles in San Juan is one of the easiest wildlife experiences you can do without leaving the city. At Playita del Condado, right next to the bridge, green sea turtles feed in the shallow lagoon. Champion Snorkel runs shore-entry tours here so you can get in the water with them.

No boat is involved. You meet on the beach, gear up, and swim out from shore. Tours last about 1 to 1.5 hours. The price is $57 per person and includes your mask, snorkel, fins, and a USCG-approved life jacket. Every guest also gets a free video of the tour.

Where the tour happens

We meet at Playita del Condado in the Condado area of San Juan. It’s walking distance from most Condado hotels and easy to reach by scooter, bus, or rideshare. The lagoon stays relatively calm compared with open ocean beaches, which makes it a good spot for snorkeling.

Green sea turtles use the seagrass beds in this area. They move slowly and are generally calm. You’ll also commonly see tropical fish and rays. Manatees visit the same lagoon regularly, though they are not guaranteed on every trip.

What the turtles are like

These are wild animals, not pets. They are curious at times but should never be chased, touched, or fed. The best encounters happen when you stay relaxed, keep a respectful distance, and let them approach or continue feeding. Our guides and spotters help locate them and make sure everyone follows passive-observation rules.

You need to be at least 12 years old and comfortable swimming. Life jackets are provided, but this is not a tour for non-swimmers.

What else you might see

Besides green sea turtles, the lagoon holds a mix of marine life:

  • Tropical fish
  • Spotted eagle rays and other rays
  • Occasional octopus or starfish
  • Manatees on many (but not all) tours

If you specifically want to see a manatee and miss one, you can come back free of charge. The same free-reschedule policy applies if you miss your favorite animal.

Practical tips

  • Arrive about 10 minutes early.
  • Wear your swimsuit under your clothes. There are limited changing options.
  • Contacts are fine; regular glasses are not.
  • Basic swimming ability is required.
  • Morning tours often have calmer conditions and active marine life, but turtles are seen throughout the day.
  • Sunscreen is fine before you enter the water; just give it time to absorb.

What’s included

  • Guided shore-entry snorkel
  • Mask, snorkel, fins, and life jacket
  • Professional spotters
  • Free video of your tour
  • Free reschedule if you miss your favorite animal

We do not touch, feed, or chase any wildlife. The goal is simply to observe them in their natural habitat.
